Pour la magnifique réhabilitation d'un vieux mas provençal
The “Tricavel” Project
We designed and manufactured this exclusive Fireplace for the ambitious improvement of a former Provençal farmhouse, led by the ‘NGA Architecture’ firm. The owner and their architect wanted a Fireplace of cubic shape and of imposing size.
The fire thus can unfold in perfect safety in an ample and bright living room.
The resulting Fireplace is comprised of a 3 × 2 m steel base and of a 2 × 2 m throat with plasterboard facing:
• A tubular structure allows suspending the mantel from the ceiling. The duct above the throat is offset, allowing to connect it to the insulated stainless flue that goes through the two storeys above. The Fireplace as a whole has the shape of a 2-meter wide cube, the facing of which perfectly aligns with a lighting channel in the concrete ceiling.
• The steel base, of 2 meters by 3, is comprised of two sections connected without apparent screws, and also perfectly blends in with the stairs.br> • The fireplace itself is made of steel, and fitted with windows that retract down into the base: an invisible mechanism allows, through a clever removable lever, lifting and lowering the four 1.5m-wide panes manually. In their lifted position, the windows ensure good combustion and perfect safety together with unencumbered enjoyability
At Saint-Jean-de-Moirans, in the Alps
The “Rossignol” Project
This architect’s projects is a feat, both technical and aesthetic:
It comprises a large open hearth set on the ground floor of the building’s large entrance hall, together with a statuesque Fireplace for the catering space two storeys above.
Both burn natural gas.
The Fireplace in the reception hall is integrated in a wall built of natural stones around the fireplace, the size of which is 1.90 m by 0.35m. It is provided with a matt black steel surround fitted into the depth of the mineral facing.
Upstairs the architect imagined a statuesque Fireplace with both sleek and sober lines.
This unique design stretches over a height of no less than 5.50 m. It is made of 480 kg of matt black steel. It is suspended through a twin bearing plate fitted to the roof’s timberwork to pick up part of the load and relieve the strain on the floor slab.
A fine exemple of a collaboration between Piros, architects and fitters.
On Bourlémont Hill at Ronchamp, south of the Vosges, not far from Belfort
The “Ronchamp” Project
What do Piros, specialists for bespoke steel Fireplaces, the international architects’ firm led by Renzo Piano, and the famous Le Corbusier have in common?
A location in the rural context of Ronchamp, in the north-east of France, a history-laden site of deep spirituality, whose heart is the Notre-Dame-du-Haut Chapel, rebuilt in 1955 by Le Corbusier, and listed as a historical building in 1967.
With its width of 2 m, its height of 0.71 m and its depth of 0.69 m, this fireplace of outstanding size was designed and manufactured to measure by Piros, from architects’ plans only – the design was elaborated for the huge firebox planned by the architect inside a concrete wall opposite the reception.
Piros’s design department also had to think up an air-inlet system that, while remaining sufficiently unobtrusive, would suit such a large-size hearth, ensuring proper combustion and preventing the window from getting soiled. The window’s metal frame is entirely invisible.
The lift-up window can also be lowered 30 cm into the concrete base to allow cleaning the top of the glass.
To the technical feat achieved by both our design depart¬ment and our boilermakers was added the logistical challenge of installing such a huge hearth, a single block of steel weighing close to a tonne: a crane was required!
Renovation and extension of a villa in the département of Vaucluse
The “Fluor” Project
The project involved the improvement and the transformation of a detached house set among vineyards at the foot of the Luberon. As described by the architect, “it features outside maintenance-free materials in their raw state, including larch slats making up shutters on the South and West elevations.
Inside, all of the furniture is of solid oak, craftfully jointed but nonetheless able to withstand the wear and tear that comes with a family of five children! Avoiding an overly and dogmatically ecological approach, we suggested to the owner common-sense techniques in the fields of insulation, heating, ventilation, protection against the sun and rain-water collection.
Finally, this house should be a place where it feels good to live, stimulating and sensual, furthering social intercourse between those who live in it, and also a close relationship to the surrounding environment.” Technical meetings allowed us to become familiar with the architect’s approach and to determine the project’s technical constraints. The Fireplace was designed using 3D modelling for best adaptation to existing volumes. Thus integrated into this architectural whole, this Fireplace has truly become the hearth of this home.
Along Serre-Ponçon Lake, a large reservoir in the upper reaches of the Durance River in the Southern Alps
The “Gaudy” Project
Building on its know-how and experience, Piros was again able to meet a specific request, by a professional active in tourism and conveyed by the fitters Cheminées Pro, located in the small city of Embrun, just upstream of Serrre-Ponçon Lake. They contacted Piros for the design and manufacture of a made-to-measure Fireplace intended to embellish “L’Écrin du lac”, a guesthouse located at Chorges, along the lake and at the foot of the famous alpine Parc National des Écrins. Piros thus designed and built, according to the wishes of the owner of “L’Écrin du lac”, a stunning, generously-shaped round Fireplace for wood, with a diameter of 1.4 m for a height of 2.4 m, set in the room that is the main living space for the guests, as this is where they gather for the meals, for resting or just for coffee. It features an impressive circular glazing comprised of four sections, two fixed and two sliding, that give a full view of the flames, from both the lounge/bar and the dining room – the window is no less than 1.2 m in diameter by a height of 0.9 m, allowing it to fully enjoy the soothing and ever-changing spectacle of fire, for exemple after a day spent on the nearby pistes. The body of the hood is hidden by a rounded facing in black powder-coated steel sheets “suspended” from side posts, so as to blend in unobtrusively into the living space while providing a harmonious partition between the lounge/bar and the dining room.
Renovation of a house in Berlin
The “Kohler” Project
For this renovation project of a house set in the middle of Berlin, the architect wanted arabesque-shaped cutouts reminiscent of the design of the stair’s railing and of the windows’ frames.
For the smoke not to escape into the room through those cutouts, they were filled out with a glazing, which remains practically invisible from a distance. We also had to match the Fireplace’s colour to the two decorative pillars on both sides.
This hearth was designed to harmonise with the angular design of the house where it is installed. Located along a stairwell, it features triple glazing, ventilated to allow touching the glass along the stair without getting burnt. The calories are exhausted through a front outlet, with another flue for the smoke. Access to the fireplace is on the other side, through a glazing that slides on a carriage.
The “JKG” Project
Coated with green heat-resistant paint, this hearth hangs like a fruit hangs from a branch. The steel tube that allows suspending it also receives the wood structure. An insulated stainless tube protects the wood from the heat of the smoke. The hearth itself allows seeing through and enjoying the view through a large window.
